When should my child visit the dentist?

Supporting your child's dental health from an early age is an important part of establishing good dental habits. Most children begin to develop their first milk teeth at around six months of age, and we encourage parents to arrange their child's first dental health check-up when their first tooth appears.

Regular dental visits help your child become familiar with the dental practice environment and provide an opportunity for their dentist to monitor the development of their teeth and oral health. Plaque can begin to form as soon as teeth emerge, so establishing a good dental health routine from an early age is important. Your dentist will recommend how often your child should attend based on their individual needs and stage of development.

*A private children’s dental health check is included at no additional cost when booked alongside a private paying adult dental health check. Includes x‑rays and fluoride if clinically appropriate. This offer applies to children aged under 6 and is limited to two free private children’s check-ups per paying adult. Additional private children’s checks will be charged at the standard rate. Both dental health checks must be booked at the same time; and children must attend at the same time as the adults scheduled appointment. This offer forms part of our standard pricing and is not a time-limited promotion. It is non-transferable and has no cash value or alternative. The practice accepts no liability on behalf of the treating clinician and acts solely as a liaison between the patient and the clinician. The practice reserves the right to amend or withdraw this offer at any time without prior notice. The children’s dental health check does not include any additional treatment identified during the appointment. If further treatment is required, a separate estimate and treatment plan will be provided.

From my very first appointment, Dr Prabhat Gurung made me feel completely at ease, explaining every step of the treatment and making sure I was comfortable throughout. A special thank you also to the dental nurse, Olivia Dale who was incredibly kind, friendly and reassuring. She helped me feel relaxed at every visit and was such an important part of the whole experience. The attention to detail and level of skill are outstanding. My teeth look completely natural, and I finally have the smile I’ve always wanted. I can’t stop smiling, and my confidence has grown so much. Another nervous patient here but I cannot thank Mel and the others enough for making me feel so at ease today!! I’m neurodivergent and very anxious - this was no trouble at all and it was so nice not feeling like a burden. Very good care, my experience has been friendly and professional; non-judgemental. If you are worried about how bad your teeth are, and that you will be judged, you won't. You will be talked to straightly and given options. It won't be cheap, but they do have finance options; they could explain that better, but then, they don't push you or make you feel like they are selling. So ask about this. I saved up first.

Dan (the dentist I use) is always friendly and remembers the problems I have with my teeth and always has good customer service skills and patience when treating. Really pleased I made the choice to go private. It is worth the money for a quality service and never feel rushed.

My daughter has been under the care for 2 years and I cannot fault anything about the service that we have received. Having her braces on for 18 months and now just retainer check up appointments. The change in her teeth is fantastic. The staff are very accommodating when I have needed to change appointments. The only let down is that there is no on site car parking and for those who perhaps struggle walking or with small children its not always easy to park so make sure you leave plenty of time to get there and get parked prior to the appointment time.

Stuart Ray is the best dentist I have ever had: calm, professional, reassuring and very gentle. I have had brilliant service from this practice from the moment I became a patient here, and have had the very best experience - from dentistry (crown replacement, broken tooth) to hygiene (special mention for Sarah Gill, the tops!) as well as the dental nurses (Lisa is fantastic) and the very welcoming receptionists.

Absolutely love it there im an adult but needed braces since i was about 16. Ive had them on about 8 months now and if i ever have a problem with them they always slot me in within 2 days. Staff are so friendly and put me at ease instantly if i ever feel nervous. They always let me know what they are going to do and explain the process. Only downside is parking but then again i dont think it is on their hands as it is in a residential estate. Place deserves alot more recognition than they get

I booked in for a check up, the location is easy to get to, the surgery is light and non intrusive, Graeme my dentist didn't faff, didn't try to sell me anything, treated me with a good professional service. Couldn't recommend this practice enough-I already have, my partner and 2 kids are already booked in !

I can not praise Durham City Smiles enough. The team are amazing, caring and so nonjudgmental. My teeth are a mess following years of abuse but I was made to feel comfortable and at ease.
